How to say I love you in Japanese?
In case if you don’t speak Japanese, there are many ways to say “I love you” in Japanese. If you do a quick Google search for “How to say I love you in Japanese” you would probably get various results like the following
- わたしは あなたを あいしてる（watashi wa anata wo aishiteru)
- 好き (suki)
- 大好き (daisuki)
- 好きだよ (suki da yo)
- 好きです (suki desu)
- 愛してるよ (ai shite ru yo)
- 君に夢中だ (kimi ni muchuu da ) etc
In case if you already speak Japanese, you probably already know in real life, saying I love you in Japanese to someone is not as easy as you think it is. In fact, the phrase “I love you” is almost never used in everyday life conversation by Japanese people. If you truly love Japanese culture, you probably already know this super classic, super famous, and super being coped by so many comedians clip (see youtube video in the following) from a TV drama series called “101回目のプロポーズ ” (101st Marriage Proposal) aired back in the 90s.
In this scene, the heroin (Yafuki) talked about how she was afraid of losing someone again (because she had a fiance and he died) so she was afraid of falling in love again. Then all the sudden, the main male character “Hoshino” jumped out in front of a track to demonstrate he would not die.
Here is the famous phrase he said right after he almost got hit by a track.
僕は死にません、僕は死にません、あなたが好きだから
(bokuwa shinimasen,bokuwa shinimasen, anataga suki dakara)
The English translation is
“I will not die, I will not die, because I like you“.
As you can see, even in such a dramatic situation, he still did not use the word “LOVE” but instead used the word “LIKE” !
